Karmann, a German coachbuilder, was the one who came up with the idea for the car. Karmann was recovering from World War II, producing steel bodies for VW, among others. By the early 1950s, the company wanted to build a car under its own brand. Karmann's bosses asked Ghia for help in developing a body that would be based on Volkswagen mechanicals.
In 1955, the Karmann Ghia was revealed, with its flowing lines. It was initially difficult to sell despite its beautiful looks. The VW Beetle was identical in every way except for the exterior. Replica Watches sold for nearly twice as much money as the original car, despite the intricate hand-built bodywork.
The car was far more affordable than exotic Europeans like Porsche and Ferrari. The 1,200c.c. The air-cooled engine didn't give it enough power for it to be considered a sports car. But its low-slung aerodynamic body made it at least a bit faster and better handling than a Beetle. The Karmann Ghia still is fun to drive. The looks are just as appealing as they were back then. In 1957, a convertible version was introduced to help capture American buyers. The buyers also voted. When production ended in 1975 almost half a millon Karmann Ghias were produced.
The car is still a bargain despite its high-water mark in terms of design. The convertible is rarer and costlier, mido replica but many people find the coupe to be the more elegant, pure design. A few years back, a Karmann Ghia was available for peanuts. Prices have steadily risen since then, but you can still find a coupe such as this for under PS20,000.
This kind of money places it on the same level as the splendid white-gold iwc big pilot replica Day Date that has ridden along in the interior red leather. The Day-Date first appeared in 1956, when the first Karmann Ghias were delivered to customers.
